In the rural village of Garasbaley, a small, sun-drenched primary school once operated with only a blackboard and a few torn notebooks. Students sat on the floor, eager to learn but with nothing to read.
In 2024, we partnered with local educators to deliver over 500 culturally relevant storybooks and two solar-powered digital tablets loaded with Somali and English learning content.
In nomadic regions near Galkayo, traditional schools are out of reach for thousands of children who move frequently with their families. That’s why we introduced mobile literacy circles and Sun Books tablets—solar-powered, durable devices pre-loaded with hundreds of lessons in Somali and English
With just 10 tablets and a local youth ambassador, we’ve reached: Over 220 nomadic children in 3 mobile camps 80% of learners now recognize the full Somali alphabet Girls' participation increased by 65%, thanks to culturally sensitive group sessions
